Sparsh FAQ

What is Polycarbonate?

Polycarbonate is a thermoplastic that has the ability to absorb heat, which means it is the preferred option for many greenhouses, as well as being used in homes for its energy efficiency, lightweight nature and overall strength. The main difference between polycarbonate and other sheeting is that polycarbonate can be heated to its melting point, cooled and then recycled, meaning it doesn’t burn like a thermoset plastic would. This makes it a very flexible building material in terms of its overall carbon footprint as it can be melted down and remolded for further use.

What are the benefits of Polycarbonate?

Polycarbonate has many applications and the many benefits mean it is used often in the manufacturing industry as well as the building sector.

Here are some of the key benefits of our polycarbonate sheets:

  • High strength material
  • 99.99% UV protection
  • Lightweight, easily transportable material, resulting in a lower carbon footprint
  • Comes in a versitile range of colours and light transmission options
  • Helps to control the temperature in your home by absorbing heat and transmitting cool light
  • Is ideal for roofing due to being shatterproof
  • Helps to save money on energy bills thanks to its temperature control ability

Do Polycarbonate sheets discolour?

All our polycarbonate sheets have a minimum 10 year guarantee against discolouration, in case discolouration occurs.

Can I cut this material myself?

Yes, this material can be cut using a fine tooth circular saw or jigsaw. Please take your time when cutting, or we offer an in house cutting service If you would prefer us to cut it for you.

Can Polycarbonate be laser cut?

No, polycarbonate is not a material that can be laser cut due to its class 1 fire rating. It can, however, be cut on a CNC.

Can I drill this material myself?

Yes, the solid and multiwall sheets can both be drilled, please just take your time when doing so.

Can I paint structural rafters before installing roofing sheets?

Yes, you can paint structural rafters or supports – but be sure to paint only with light or white color. Do not use dark colors like black or brown that can absorb and reflect intense heat.

What is the recommended ceiling height when installing Suntuf over a grill?

There no set height. All grills are different and cook at wide range of temperatures. Customers who wish to grill under Suntuf must be certain that the maximum temperature above the grill never exceeds 212°F for Suntuf. The temperature represents the maximum service temperature for the product. If the product is subjected to temperatures higher than these, the product warranty will be voided and damage can occur to the panels.

Can I paint polycarbonate panels?

We do not recommend painting our polycarbonate panels. Polycarbonate is a very resilient material, but it is potentially sensitive to chemicals contained in many exterior paints. While we can test a paint for compatibility, we have no way of controlling whether a paint manufacturer will remain consistent with their formulas over time.

What adhesive should I use for polycarbonate panels like Suntuf or Suntop?

For sealing polycarbonate, use a 100% silicone caulking.

How should I store Polycarbonate sheets when not in use?

Store sheets in a protected, shaded, ventilated site, with no direct exposure to sunlight and winds. For outdoor temporary storage, cover with an opaque protective tarp, avoiding heat-absorbing materials.

Do Polycarbonate sheets expand in heat?

Polycarbonate sheets expand with heat, and contract with cold. Various Polycarbonate products require different installation and fastening methods to account for the expansion and contraction.

What are “closure strips”?

Closure strips match the corrugation pattern of the panels of Suntuf and Suntop panels. The closure strips are attached to the purlins, which are horizontal supporting members that support a roof. Sometimes purlins are used with rafters, which run perpendicular to the purlins.
